Location: Unit D2 is located at the Black Point Power Station, one of the world's largest gas-fired CCGT power stations, situated in the New Territories of Hong Kong.

The Black Point D2 unit is a 600-megawatt, advanced combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power generation unit at CLP Power's Black Point Power Station in Hong Kong, which began commercial operation in early 2024. It uses high-efficiency Siemens H-class gas turbine technology and a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to significantly reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality, supporting Hong Kong's transition away from coal-fired power.

Key Features and Purpose

Combined Cycle Technology:

Unit D2 utilizes a CCGT system, which generates electricity from both a gas turbine and a steam turbine. This "bottoming cycle" uses waste heat from the gas turbine's exhaust to create steam, driving the steam turbine and significantly increasing operational efficiency to about 60%.

High Efficiency:

The ~60% efficiency makes it one of the most efficient gas-fired units globally, leading to reduced fuel consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to older technologies.

Environmental Benefits:

Equipped with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, the unit is designed to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

Role in Energy Transition:

The addition of D2 (along with its sister unit, D1) is a crucial part of CLP Power's strategy to phase out coal-fired generation and increase natural gas in the power generation fuel mix, supporting Hong Kong's carbon neutrality goals.
